Mitosis Community Guidelines
Welcome to Mitosis! Our goal is to inform, entertain and allow people to connect in a positive and constructive way. In order to ensure the best possible experience for everyone, we’ve outlined some overall community guidelines. These rules are by no means a complete and finalized list but rather, serve as a starting point.
We created these community guidelines to help make sure that everyone is welcome to participate in any areas where users are able to contribute content and opinions such as comments areas on our site, our social media pages and content areas such as YouTube, Facebook, or Instagram, etc. We expect everyone in our community to follow these guidelines.
Let’s begin:
Be respectful. This is a ‘no-brainer’ for some but a nuanced issue. It’s important to understand that everyone will have different experiences and opinions and that differing opinions are bound to occur. This is welcome! Communicating with people that think or feel differently than yourself is an important way in which we, as humans, learn and grow. That said, it can be tempting to fall into sarcastic prose or start to throw around ad-hominins and devolve into an outright insult tit-for-tat. Don’t do this! If your intent is to trigger someone or if you’re feeling triggered yourself, consider the option of “agreeing to disagree”. This simple concept can help to end the conversation in a civil manner.
Be positive. No, I’m not talking about being full of sunshine and flowers. When stating an opinion or counter-opinion, be “pro” whatever it is you’re talking about. This means, focusing energy on making good points and describing the “features & benefits” of your stance. Think of your posts as being viewed by a group of your peers which you’re trying to sway to your way of thinking. “You get more flies with honey than with vinegar” is an old adage. Spend your energy on the “pros” of what you’re describing as opposed to simply calling someone’s ideas, “stupid” or other quick, meaningless retorts.
Be unique. That is, focus on adding something new to the conversation. A, “same” post doesn’t add or give any insights. Personal experiences, additional data points, funny anecdotes or witty banter is great, just try to avoid the, “me too” or “yeah, I agree” replies. You can do better and this is a platform that welcomes long-form posts. The more details and depth of what you share, the more replies and connections you’ll make.
Source Data. Got an opinion? Great, try and preface that opinion with, “I believe that” or “in my experience” etc., and be prepared to share the data that brought you to your conclusion. Sharing a link to a data source is a great way to start a conversation and/or make a point. Save yourself some headache and spend some time thinking about how and why you feel the way you do about a topic before you start typing. Make a case for yourself and back it up. You’ll gain much more respect that way.
Help out. Our moderators can only catch so much. See something that violate the rules such as; spam, personal attacks, or inappropriate comments or things of the like, let us know!
Rules
Mitosis is NOT a public company or a government agency. We retain the right to remove comments, mute users, ban users or promote great content at our complete discretion. The rules below act as guidelines and may evolve and grow. Breaking the rules below may result in whatever action we deem fit. In short, Be Excellent to Each Other and Party on Dudes!
- Personal attacks: Don’t attack or insult others. This includes name calling.
- Racism, sexism, and other discrimination: Attacking entire classes of people is the same as attacking an individual and we will ban someone for doing it.
- Trolling: Don’t derail conversations or attempt to trigger people.
- Spreading misinformation:Â Spreading conspiracy theories and/or misinformation will result in warnings, removal of posts and/or banning. This is not an X-files forum. (See “Source Data” above)
- Doxxing: Revealing someone’s personal information such as pictures, addresses, links to other accounts or sharing of any other identifying data of another person is strictly forbidden and will result in a ban.
- Illegal activities:Â Do not post links to illegal downloads, tutorials or information on how to commit crimes or steal services. (My, how the times have changed!)
- NSFW material: Not allowed. Even “borderline” images or links are not acceptable. Think “PG-13”. This may include pornographic material, lude language, gore and or anything we consider disgusting.
- Toxicity: This may include complaining, deriding or just bringing in a bad attitude. You’re welcome to criticize just don’t let that be the only time you add to the conversation.
- Spam: It’s a fine line between schilling and sharing. If we get even a whiff that you’re spamming you’ll be warned or banned. This includes self-promotion. If you want to share your personal project, contact our advertising department. If you’re trying to pump a project, don’t.
Let’s keep things positive and focused. Help us build a community of like minded people!
